TIED TO GREATNESSTM is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to impacting the image and esteem of inner city males through affirmation, instruction, and long-term mentorship connections. This national outreach movement was inspired by the literary work of Image Authority Alex Ellis; Author of the award-winning book Restoring the Male Image: A Look from the Inside Out. This organization focuses on connecting young men of color to community role models who live life with integrity, character, and a polished image. The program uses the power of personal interaction, principled-based dialogue, and positive role models to impact how young men value their image, from the inside out. We believe that the absence of fathers is one integral factor in the misleading of youth. Thus, we are a committed crusade to saving our young men by taking responsibility for them as a community.
The program culminates with every young man receiving Alex’s book and a “Right of Passage” ceremony allowing the mentor to give the gift of a tie and a personal lesson on tying it. This affirmation says, “Son, we believe you are going somewhere that will require you to wear a tie.” Many of the young men have never received this type of affirmative, one-on-one interaction from an adult male and there is clear evidence of a positive impact. Finally, we encourage the men in attendance to join our mentoring partner, The Up Center’s Team Up Program, to secure long-term relationships with these young men from boyhood to manhood.
