The African American Leadership Giving Initiative is designed to celebrate, recognize, and align African American donors, who contribute $1,000 or more, with the United Way Community Impact mission. Through this initiative, members will have the opportunity to see the impact that their financial support and volunteerism have on community issues.
At the heart of every successful initiative are the leaders who provide strength, character, and a sense of purpose that propels the effort forward.
Diversity in all its forms is very important to the United Way of South Hampton Roads. The African American Leadership Initiative was established in 2006 with three goals:
• To educate, inspire and, above all, engage African Americans around
key human service issues that are important to us.
• To increase philanthropic giving among African Americans and increase Leadership and Tocqueville giving.
• To provide opportunities for recognition, networking and volunteerism.
A council, comprised of corporate, professional and not-for-profit community leaders, governs the African American Leadership Giving Initiative. It is a group of African Americans that commits time, energy and financial resources to build a stronger community through United Way of South Hampton Roads.
Throughout our history, African Americans have always embraced a legacy of giving. We give to our churches, social and civic organizations, and volunteer our time. We believe in taking care of one another. This is the focus of the African Americans in the South Hampton Roads area.
A diverse contributor base is essential to the success of the annual United Way campaign. African Americans play a vital role in achieving this success Your generous gift is a vital part of this community’s well-being and success, for it takes vision, strategy, execution and dollars to turn good intentions into results. You can help the United Way do together what none of us can do alone.
